PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new illuminating method for obtaining uniform irradiation intensity and high luminance, and to provide a simple pixel forming method. SOLUTION: A display device supplying illumination light from a back side of a display picture is provided with an almost panel-like light emitting board formed of a plurality of waveguides where waveguides having light emitting functions emitting light beams of three or above individual colors are made into a group, and with an excitation light source in a termination of the waveguide having the light emitting function. In the illuminating method of the display device; a picture forming element arranged in front of the almost panel-like light emitting board is illuminated, and the display picture is formed by taking out light in a display picture direction from a side of the waveguide having the light emitting function.
