PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which makes a backlight illuminate only in a period wherein a liquid crystal display element responds to display data, the liquid crystal display device being characterized in that no reverse transition is caused at a high temperature. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal display panel 10 using OCB mode liquid crystal and a temperature detecting means 18 of detecting its temperature. A one-field period is divided into a black write period, a display data write period, and a display data HOLD period; and black data for reverse transition prevention are written in the black write period, the display data are written in the display data write period, and the backlight 11 is made to illuminate in part of the period within the display data HOLD period. When the temperature of the liquid crystal display panel 10 is higher than specified temperature, a timing control means 22 performs control so that start timing of the display data writing is slower continuously or stepwise than the start timing of the black data writing as the temperature of the liquid crystal display panel is higher.
