A method for controlling a cooling fan of an image forming apparatus is provided to check a temperature variation of a fuser when the image forming apparatus is in a standby state and vary the operating speed of the cooling fan according to the checked result to reduce unnecessary noise and the inner temperature of the image forming apparatus. A method for controlling a cooling fan of an image forming apparatus includes a step of calculating a temperature variation of a fuser for a predetermined period before the state of the image forming apparatus is converted to a printing standby state(S304), a step of dividing a standby state period of the image forming apparatus into at least one time period and setting a duty ratio to be applied to the cooling fan for each time period(S308), and a step of driving the cooling fan according to the duty ratio for each time period, which is set to a grade corresponding to the temperature variation(S309).
