PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a printing time in an image forming apparatus equipped with a rotary developing apparatus. SOLUTION: In an initial state, a developing roller for each developing unit is held on the front end side in the rotating direction of a rotating frame for the developing unit body, a developing operation of an optional developing unit starts in a position where the developing roller for the optional developing unit faces the image carrier, and during the developing operation, the developing roller for the developing unit is held in the position facing the image carrier, irrespective of the rotation of the rotating frame. The apparatus includes a first mechanism of moving the developing roller from the front end side in the rotating direction of the rotating frame for the developing unit body to the trailing end side in the rotating direction in accordance with the rotation of the rotating frame.
