PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing degradation in image quality for reading a manuscript, especially for reading by a higher multiplying factor. SOLUTION: When a manuscript is scanned, a multiplying factor established to a user is inputted at a control unit 40 of an image forming apparatus 100 through a control unit 70. The control unit 40 reduces a drive speed of a ventilator 30 (cooling fan etc.), when the multiplying factor is larger than a predetermined multiplying factor (Th_m) memorized at a memory 50. Consequently, since vibration accompanied with driving of the ventilator 30 is suppressed, degradation can be suppressed in image quality of a read image. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
