PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for a magnetic disk, the substrate realizing a magnetic recording medium which can be produced in large quantities, excellent in electro magnetic conversion characteristics and performs recording and reproduction for high recording density. SOLUTION: In the substrate for a magnetic disk, an amplitude Wa of undulation on its surface is 0.1-0.5 nm, where the amplitude is measured at a measuring wavelength of 5.0 mm with a multifunctional disk inteferometer, an average amplitude Wb of micro undulation formed on the above undulation is at most 0.3 nm, where the average amplitude is measured at a measuring wavelength of 30-200μm with a three-dimensional surface structure analysis microscope, and a Wb/Wa value is at least 0.6, wherein the Wb/Wa value is given by dividing the average amplitude Wb of the micro undulation by the amplitude Wa of the undulation.
