PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a similar image search device suitably used to search a target image based on an ambiguous memory. SOLUTION: A similarity calculation processing part 116 calculates the similarity between an inquiry image and each target image of search using layout characteristic quantities and image property characteristic quantities for the inquiry image and the target image of search, and ranks target images of search in the descending order of similarity. In the calculation of the similarity, a weight larger than in the image property characteristic quantity is given to the layout characteristic quantity. The target images of search are registered in an image DB 119, and the characteristic quantities thereof are read from a characteristic quantity DB to the similarity calculation processing part. When the inquiry image is registered in the image DB, its characteristic is read from the characteristic quantity DB. When the inquiry image is not registered, its characteristic quantity is calculated by each characteristic quantity calculation processing part 114, 115, and inputted to the similarity calculation processing part.
