PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect abnormality in an original reading apparatus quickly and accurately in abnormal vibration. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a carriage 6 for reading a document, a document reader 7, a detector 11 for detecting vibration for the apparatus, and a carriage diagnostic section 20 for detecting abnormality in original reading operation by a document reading means in abnormal vibration. Abnormality detection and repair can be carried out without causing abnormality of output image. In abnormal vibration, abnormal reading can be detected automatically by providing a control unit 2 for operating the carriage 6, the original reader 7, and the carriage diagnostic section 20. When abnormal reading of the original is detected at the carriage diagnostic section 20, abnormality of output image can be prevented surely by forbidding the reading operation by the original reader 7 and the carriage 6.
