PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a program etc. to improve a correct judge rate in the line direction judgment. SOLUTION: The line direction judgment method comprises a step for acquiring a first number of recognition characters by the character recognition processing of the vertical direction to the result of reading of a character group of vertical writing or horizontal writing, and a second number of recognition characters by the character recognition processing of the horizontal direction to the result of reading; a step for referring to an n-gram data storage part that stores appearance probability of the n (n is an integer number of 2 or more) continuous characters, and calculating a first average appearance probability of n continuous recognition characters by the character recognition processing of the vertical direction, and a second average appearance probability of the n continuous recognition characters by the character recognition processing of the horizontal direction; and a step for judging whether the line is of vertical writing or horizontal writing according to the degree of the first average appearance probability and the second average appearance probability when the first number of recognition characters and the second number of recognition characters satisfy predetermined conditions.
