PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of increasing liquid crystal margin by reducing the ratio of disposition of gap-retaining column spacers. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with: a first substrate 100 and a second substrate 200 facing each other; a plurality of step parts formed on prescribed parts on the first substrate 100; first column spacers 210 which are formed on the second substrate 200 and are in contact with the step parts; second column spacers 220 which are formed on the second substrate 200 apart from the first substrate 100 and has a formation ratio larger than that of the first column spacers 210; and a liquid crystal layer formed between the first substrate 100 and the second substrate 200, wherein the area of surfaces of the first column spacers 210 corresponding to the step parts is larger than the area of surfaces of the step parts which are in contact with the first column spacers 210.
