PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device which is made lightweight and which secures case strength and precision while having its case made thin. SOLUTION: The projection type image display device has a light source, a display element, a projection lens, and the case which contains the light source, display element, and projection lens. The case is provided with a projection hole and the projection type image display device is provided with a rotating means of rotating the projection lens to a projection position where a peripheral edge of the projection lens projects from the projection hole or a retraction position where the peripheral edge of the projection lens retracts into the projection hole.
