The invention relates to a device for damping the movement of moving gear (1) with respect to fixed gear (3). The device comprises means for generating an electric current that changes with the rate of movement of the moving gear (1) with respect to fixed gear (3). According to the invention, the device further comprises means (20 to 25) for altering the mechanical properties of a fluid located between the moving gear (1) and the fixed gear (3) using the electric current. The means (4 to 7, 8, 10) for generating an electric current comprise a generator comprising a rotor (4 to 7) and a stator (8, 10), the rotor (4 to 7) being secured to the moving gear (1) and the stator (8, 10) being secured to the fixed gear (3). Use is advantageously made of a magnetorheological fluid held in a magnetic field generated by the electric current.
