The invention relates to a microbial method for the production of specific isomers of conjugated linoleic acids, particularly the cis-9, trans-11 isomer, using micro-organisms. The inventive method involves the optional incorporation of the trans-11 isomer of vaccenic acid as a substrate for a culture medium in which micro-organisms such as bacteria, yeast and fungi generate the bioconversion to the isomer of interest with the generation of a novel Z (cis) configuration at position 9 of the chain. The aforementioned conjugated linoleic acids can be used in the bio-food industry and the biotechnology sector.
