摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass substrate for a magnetic recording medium improved in the fracture strength, and to provide a method of manufacturing the glass substrate. SOLUTION: A glass substrate 1 shown in Fig.1(a) is prepared. A glass substrate 2 having a chemically reinforced layer 4 formed on the surface thereof as shown in Fig.1(c) is manufactured by applying a chemical reinforcing treatment to the glass substrate 1. A non-chemically reinforced layer 3 exists in the inner part of the glass substrate 2. A principal surface of the glass substrate 2 is ground to thin the chemically reinforced layer of the principal surface. Thus, the compressive stress and tensile stress in the inner part of the glass substrate are balanced, thereby enhancing the fracture strength. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
