PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing unit capable of correcting background precisely even if the background is darker than characters, or the like; and to provide a method of processing the image, a program, and a storage medium in which the program is stored. SOLUTION: The image processing unit comprises an image read means 1 for reading the book original 40 placed on contact glass 2; a background color detection means for detecting a color whose frequency of use is the maximum as a background color, based on the pixel value of the scan image of the book original 40 read by the image read means 1; and a background correction means for correcting the background near a binder 41 in the scan image, based on the background color detected by the background color detection means and the pixel value at the flat section of the book original 40.
