PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of detecting a prescribed pattern embedded with inhibit information or the like with high accuracy. SOLUTION: A composite machine 1 for detecting the prescribed pattern image from image data read by an image read means 4 to control an output of the image data includes: a background detection means 6 for detecting a background density of the image data; a background elimination means 7 for eliminating the background density of the image data detected by the background detection means 6 from the image data; and a pattern detection means 8 for detecting the prescribed pattern image from the image data whose background density is eliminated by the background elimination means 7. Since the prescribed pattern is detected from the image data whose background density is eliminated in this way, the prescribed pattern embedded with the inhibit information or the like can be detected with high accuracy.
