PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk driver which has superior operability and reliability and can be made compact. SOLUTION: The disk driver 2 has a fixed part and an extension/contraction part supported by the fixed part to freely extend and contract. A disk driving part is mounted on the fixed part and the extension/contraction part is driven by an extension/contraction driving mechanism to extend to the fixed part. A disk insertion slot is formed atop of the extension/contraction part in its extension/contraction direction and a disk is inserted into the disk insertion slot, thereby the extension/contraction part extends. Further, the disk driver is provided with a detection part 50 which detects a recording medium being inserted through the disk insertion slot and a magnetic medium detecting member 54. The recording medium detection part is provided to move between a first position where the operation of the extension/contraction driving mechanism is restricted when no recording medium is inserted and a second position where the extension/contraction driving mechanism is allowed to operate and the detection part is placed in operation, and can move from the first position to the second position in response to the insertion of the recording medium through the disk insertion slot.
