Petroleum yields, esp. from strata contg. oil and gas, are increased by injecting under pressure an aq. soln. of ammonia into the stratum which has been opened for oil recovery. Alternatively, gaseous ammonia may be injected. Yield from oil-bearing strata are increased. The process can be used to obtain a secondary yield from strata which have already been exploited. The ammonia and its aq. soln. can easily be sepd. from the oil and can be used again.
