Catalytic converter and method of making the same

A catalytic converter comprising a catalyst carrier (1), a casing (2) accommodating therewithin the catalyst carrier (1), a catalyst mat (3; 3C, 3D) interposed between the catalyst carrier (1) and the casing (2), and an annular stopper (4; 4E; 4F) at an end (1A) of the catalyst carrier (1), wherein the catalyst mat (3; 3C, 3D) has an extension portion (3B) compressed between the casing (2) and the stopper (4; 4E; 4F) for holding the stopper (4; 4E; 4F) in place within the casing (2). A method of making a catalytic converter is also provided.
