The charged particles tend to conglomerate with entrapped ionised gases, and these conglomerates are separated from the effluent gases by standard collection techniques involving the use of ancillary apparatus such as a knockout baffle 24, an absorbtive filter (Fig. 3, not shown), or an electrostatic precipitator (Fig. 4, not shown). The irradiation zone may comprise a shielded passageway containing a radio-isotope such as strontium 90, cobalt 60 or caesium 137 (Figs. 2, 3 and 5, not shown). Particulates, e.g. of carbon or sintered clay, may be injected into the effluent gas to act as charged carriers for the ionised gas pollutants.
