In examples; (i) A tube of P- shaped cross-section (Fig. 1) comprises a cylindrical metal wire braid 1, an asbestos cloth 2 whose edges are interleaved by a thin strip of unvulcanized fluorocarbon rubber, and a ply 3 of unvulcanized fluorocarbon rubber. The assembly is subsequently cured. (ii) A cylindrical tube (Fig. 2) comprises an asbestos braid 4, a wire braid 5 and a fluorocarbon layer 6. Tubular articles may be formed on a mandrel, with the braid being partially cut through at spaced intervals. The ends may be permanently closed by a joining tube 7 of asbestos-reinforced flame-resistant rubber which is bonded between ends 8, 10 of the tube, e.g. by adhesive. If the seal is to be opened and re-closed, the connection of ends 8, 10 over the tube 7 may be made by interconnecting tension springs anchored to the braid at each end 8, 10; each spring may be attached to a plurality of wires which are anchored to the tube at equally-spaced points to ensure that the springs act in the axial direction (Figs. 4, 5, not shown). |
