ENHANCED PERIODIC SIGNAL ENHANCEMENT

An improved periodic signal enhancement system is provided to enhance a voiced segment without strengthening non-stationary noise and enhance a periodic structure of the voice segment under the existence of tonal interference. A periodic signal enhancement system(100) enhances perceptual quality of speech signals. The system includes a delay unit(104) which delays a signal received through a discrete input. A spectral modifier(102) connected to the delay unit is programmed to smooth spectrum characteristic of background noise. An adaptive filter(108) connected to the spectral modifier adapts filter characteristic such that the filter characteristic is matched to a response to a signal which is not delayed. A programmable filter(106) is linked to the delay unit. The programmable filter has a transfer function related to the transfer function of the adaptive filter.
