A method for adjusting size of a display character according to distance to a user, and a mobile terminal using the same are provided to provide an optimum display environment to a user in which the user can suitably recognize characters, numbers or icons in using a mobile terminal. A data storage unit(108) stores an eyesight table and a distance matching table. A distance change sensor(110) measures distance between the user's eyes and a mobile terminal. A microprocessor(120) controls the general operation of the mobile terminal, and controls each element to measure the eyesight of the user, match the size of a character to the eyesight information, store it in the data storage unit, sense a change in the distance upon receiving the distance from the distance change sensor, and change the size of the character when the distance is changed.
