<p>A ratchet one-way clutch has an inner member (54;106;160) with notches (68;122;162), an outer member (52;104;146;150) with pockets (66;120;144;152) and pawl members (56;82;84;90;108;90';148;156) positioned in the pockets (66;120;144;152) for engagement with the notches (68;122;162). The pawl members (56;82;84;90;108;90';148;156) have a pivot ridge which mates with a peak in the pockets (66;120;144;152). Spring means, such as garter springs, coil springs or ribbon springs are used to provide a tilting force on the pawls (56;82;84;90;108;90';148;156). The pawl center of mass (CM) can be selectively positioned so that the pawl can have a tendency to engage or disengage the notches (68;122;162). Axial retainment members (62;64;100;112) having axially extending flanges can also be used with the present invention for improved radial bearing capacity.
