An over heating preventing method for a microwave oven is provided to automatically change output power of magnetron by considering cooking time and stopped time when the output power is set higher than 70% to prevent components from being overheated. An over heating preventing method for a microwave oven having a magnetron output level controller includes receiving a cooking condition containing a magnitude of an output level of magnetron about a post-cooking and a cooking starting command from a user, checking a stopped time from time when pre-cooking is finished to time when the post-cooking starts in a case when the magnitude of the output level of the magnetron is set in advance, and changing the magnitude of the output level of the magnetron to a predetermined magnitude according to the checked stopped time to operate the microwave oven. The cooking condition includes cooking time. The magnitude of the output level of the magnetron is adjusted to the predetermined magnitude according to a reference time and the stopped time as a sum of an operating time, that is, the pre-cooking time and an elapsed time of the post-cooking.
