A method for the liquefaction of coal using a solvent extraction process in which finely-divided coal, a solvent, and a catalyst-acting ash derived from coal are admixed and subjected to solvent extraction conditions. The ash utilized in the solvent extraction process is a substantially carbon-free residue resulting from the decarbonization of coal.
