Method and apparatus for encoding a protocol data unit (PDU) stream is described. In one example, packets of the PDU stream are outer coded to produce a symbol stream. The symbol stream is formatting to produce trellis groups. The trellis groups are formed into blocks of MxN groups. For each of the blocks, M groups are processed using N trellis encoders to produce N trellis encoder outputs. Each of the N trellis encoder outputs is mapped ont o a quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellation to generate N QAM symbol streams. In another example, a single shared trellis encoder is used and channel bond grouping is performed on the encoded QAM symbols.
