A system a dynamically changing set of device (10) connected to a communication medium (12). Client devices of a shared server device send detection messages to the server device and forward absence report messages about the absence of the server device among each other when it is detected that the server device is no longer actively connected to the system. The client devices maintain respective lists of forwarding addresses for use as destination addresses when forwarding the absence report message. The client devices that share a server device also communicate among each other, without occupying the server device, to update their lists of forwarding addresses and optionally to equalize the frequencies at which different client devices send test messages to the server device (10). Thus on the client devices are able to adapt more quickly to changing circumstances without causing an overload at the server device (10) if a large number of client devices (10) is present.
