PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a support having excellent dimensional stability, long time preservability and running durability and capable of forming a high density magnetic recording medium having reduced dimensional change due to environmental change and a reduced error rate. SOLUTION: In the support for the magnetic recording medium, layers (M layers) each containing a metal oxide, a metal hydroxide and water are provided on both surfaces of a polyester film and each M layer has 50 to 200 nm thickness. The ratio (peak intensity of the metal oxide/peak intensity of water) of peak intensity of the metal hydroxide to peak intensity of water measured by an IR spectroscopy in each M layer is specified to be in the range of 0.5 to 2.0.
