PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new xanthone derivative having excellent skin brightening effect and exerting excellent effects in fading and preventing pigmentation, fleckles, chloasma or the like after skin sunburn. SOLUTION: The new xanthone derivative of a specific structure is provided. Skin care preparations and pharmaceutical compositions each containing the new xanthone derivative are also provided, respectively. The above xanthone derivative, which has melanogenesis-inhibitory effect and is useful as a skin brightening agent, exerts excellent skin-brightening effect through being compounded in the above preparations and compositions.
