In recovering hydrocarbons floating on water the fact that any body passing through the hydrocarbon layer becomes coated with a film of hydrocarbon the thickness of which is a function of the hydrocarbon viscosity, is used in that two cylinders are floated in the polluted water, which rotate in opposite directions and act as a general pump.
