Continuous treatment of layers esp. polymerisable lacquers by means of electron beams under a protective gas atmosphere is effected by irradiating the layers on a transporter in the radiation passage of the electron beams under the simultaneous action of pressurised inert gas jest which are sprayed in a very fine distribution almost vertically on the faces. Enables the irradiation treatment to be effected continuously under the full protection of an inert gas so that the action of oxygen is prevented. The method is suitable for industrial use. The inert gas is pref. O2.
