A fuel block for high temp. nuclear reactors consists of a basic structure threaded with holes, some of which allow the free passage of the coolant and others of which are filled with fuel briquets in the form of thin plates and sealed in (but with enough space left to allow for thermal expansion). Heat leaves the briquets from the two faces perpendicular to the axis of the plate. No differential deformation of the main block takes place. The briquets are kept separate from the coolant and do not become corroded.
|
