PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seat belt retractor that can absorb energy at multiple levels. SOLUTION: Once a sensor for detecting the status of a vehicle is activated, the seat belt retractor equipped with the first and second energy absorbing mechanisms, which are initiated in an engagement position, gets started. The second energy absorbing mechanism can be placed at the engagement position when the first energy absorbing mechanism is moved and secured to a proper place by a securing mechanism. Also, the second energy absorbing mechanism can be shut down by a controller. The first and second energy absorbing mechanisms may include a torsion bar and a pre-bent member as a main component.
