PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oil reservoir forming method for a lubricating mechanical element for efficiently forming a number of oil reservoirs contributive to forming an oil film. SOLUTION: In the oil reservoir forming method, a spiral grooves 2 is first engraved in a cylindrical pinion raw material 1 and then gear teeth 3 are formed while leaving the bottom of the groove in a region including the spiral groove 2 of the pinion raw material 1. The bottom of the remaining groove is used for oil reservoirs. The number of oil reservoirs are efficiently formed concurrently with the formation of the gear teeth without applying grooving work.
