PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an objectiveα-olefin having high quality and useful for a comonomer raw material for polyethylene by the oligomerization reaction of ethylene in a reaction solvent. SOLUTION: Theα-olefin production method comprises a reaction step to carry out oligomerization reaction of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst containing a transition metal to convert at least a part of the ethylene to anα-olefin and obtain a mixture of theα-olefin and unreacted ethylene; anα-olefin separation step to separate theα-olefin from the mixture obtained by the reaction step by distillation; and anα-olefin purification step to contact theα-olefin obtained by theα-olefin separation step with a solid inorganic oxide and/or activated carbon to obtain purifiedα-olefin for a comonomer raw material for polyethylene.
