<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a NOx emission reduction method of an internal combustion engine and the internal combustion engine suitable for the method. <P>SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine has at least an air intake port (4) preferably controlled by a piston (3); a plurality of discharge ports, for combustion products produced by combustion in a working chamber, which can be controlled by independently operable valves (9, 10), and at least one of which is connected to a recirculation pipe (18) which returns to the working chamber (2) directly or indirectly; and at least one working chamber (2) which is separated by piston (3) cooperatively working with a crank shaft and into which fuel and air are supplied. The opening timing of the valve (10) assigned to the discharge port (recirculation gas outlet (8)) connected with the recirculation pipe (18) is set in a a crank angle region where the opening starts and ends before the respectively assigned intake port (4) operates.
