PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert a polarization direction with high precision with respect to a device and a method for converting a polarization direction, with which a polarization direction of incident light is converted. SOLUTION: The device for converting the polarization direction is equipped with: a TE-TM converter on which light having a TE mode component or a TM mode component is made incident and from which light polarized in accordance with an applied control voltage is emitted; and a voltage applying portion to apply the control voltage to the TE-TM converter, wherein the voltage applying portion applies a first level control voltage to make the TE-TM converter emit light with prescribed polarization within an application period including a timing of light incidence on the TE-TM converter, and applies a second level control voltage with a sign different from that of the first level control voltage within a portion of a non-application period other than the application period.
