PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone which enables its operator to easily ascertain the contents of a receiving e-mail even when he or she is preparing a reply e-mail. SOLUTION: When the operator pushes down the readout starting button of an operating unit 8, signals P1 directing a control unit 9 to start the reading of receiving mail are output to the control unit 9. When the control unit 9 receives the signals P1, the control unit 9 reads out a receiving e-mail from a storage unit 7 and outputs it to a voice compounding unit 10. The voice compounding unit 10 compounds sound signals from the receiving mail and outputs them to a speaker 11. Since the portable telephone is configured as above, even when the reply e-mail is displayed on a display unit 2, the contents of the receiving e-mail can be easily ascertained by voices output from the speaker 11.
