An electronic control power steering system for a vehicle and a method thereof are provided to detect the torque according to rotation of a steering wheel by embedding a drive motor in the steering column. An electronic control power steering system for a vehicle includes a steering wheel(2), a steering column(6), a pinion gear(8), and a rack gear(10). The steering column transfers the manipulation force of the steering wheel to a steering shaft. The pinion gear is provided at an end of the steering column. The rack gear is enmeshed with the pinion gear to move the steering shaft by converting the rotation of the steering wheel to a linear movement. The electronic control power steering system includes a torque sensor(4), a motor(20), and an ECU. The torque sensor is disposed on one side of the steering wheel to detect the torque due to the rotation of the steering wheel. The motor is mounted to the steering column to supplement the manipulation force of the steering wheel. The ECU calculates the amount of current for controlling the motor and controls the motor by using the calculated amount of current.
