PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a garbage treatment apparatus hardly allowing garbage to adhere to the inside of the garbage treating chamber and allowing easy cleaning of the inside of the chamber. SOLUTION: The garbage treatment apparatus (1) discharging crushed garbage together with cleaning water has a garbage treating chamber (8) to be charged with garbage, a flow rate detecting means of detecting the flow rate of cleaning water flowing into the garbage treating chamber, a crushing means (18 and 20a) of crushing garbage charged into the garbage treating chamber, a driving means of (12) rotation-driving the crushing means, a garbage discharging section (14) discharging garbage crushed by the crushing means out of the garbage treating chamber and a controlling means (22) of carrying out operation of the crushing and the cleaning mode by actuating the driving means. The controlling means actuates the driving means, in the crushing mode, only when the flow rate detecting means detects a flow rate equal to or higher than a specified flow rate and operates the driving means, in the cleaning mode, independent of the results detected by the flow rate detecting means.
