<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inter-vehicle distance detection system and an inter-vehicle distance detection method allowing to accurately measure the inter-vehicle distance from one's own vehicle to a surrounding vehicle even when the surrounding vehicle is made impossible to be detected by a radar through the influence of multipath or the like. <P>SOLUTION: When the surrounding vehicle is captured by the radar 1, the vehicle width W of the surrounding vehicle is calculated from an accurate inter-vehicle distance L determined by the radar 1 and an accurate vehicle prospective angleθ<SB>1</SB>determined from an image photographed by a camera 2 and is stored in a memory 5. When the surrounding vehicle is made impossible to be detected by the radar 1, the inter-vehicle distance X to the surrounding vehicle is calculated using the trigonometric function theorem on the basis of the accurate vehicle width W of the surrounding vehicle stored in the memory 5 in advance and an accurate vehicle prospective angleθ<SB>2</SB>determined from an image photographed by the camera 2 at that point in time. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT</p> |
