1304243 Ball joints TRW Inc 5 Oct 1970 [20 Jan 1970] 47259/70 Heading E2F A ball and socket joint is formed with the shank of a ball-ended stud 11 extending through a small hole in a stamped, cup-shaped housing 10, the larger opening of the housing having an out-turned, curved flange 42. A dishshaped cover 12 is placed over the larger opening and urged towards the ball whilst spinwedging the cylindrical sides of the cover to form a radially extending, flat wall 40 extending at right angles to the sides of the housing 10 and thereby gripping the flange 42. The periphery of the flange 42 may have surface irregularities which conform to portions on the cylindrical sides of the cover 12 to prevent relative rotation. The bottom of the cover 12 may be spaced from, 49, the flange 42 or may contact it. The sides of the housing may be ribbed for insertion in a suspension member 22. A grease fitting may be inserted in the cover 12. A spring may be inserted between the ball 55 and the cover 12 to take up wear, Fig. 4 (not shown). |
