PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact variable wavelength light source which cuts off unnecessary light generated during wavelength switching, and outputs only laser light having a desired wavelength. SOLUTION: Laser light emitted in a specified region on a substrate is branched to at least two optical waveguides; and at least one of the optical waveguide has an optical gate function of operation based upon an external signal, and the other optical waveguide has a passing or amplifying function for light. Consequently, light having passed through the former is used as signal light, and light passing through the latter is guided to a wavelength monitor, so that, while the wavelength monitor is placed in operation during wavelength switching, unnecessary signal light can be cut off.
