This invention provides a fluorescent material, which has high color rendering properties, can provide a high-luminance luminescent device, and emits green to yellow color, a luminescent device using the fluorescent material, and an image display device and a lighting equipment comprising the luminescent device. The fluorescent material is characterized by comprising a compound represented by general formula (I) in which a compound having a garnet structure is a matrix and a metal element of a luminescent center ion is contained within the matrix: M1 aM2 bXcM3 dM4 3Oe (I) wherein M1 represents Mg and/or Zn; M2 represents a divalent metal element except for Mg and Zn; X represents a metal element of a luminescent center ion composed mainly of Ce; M3 represents a trivalent metal element except for X; M4 represents a tetravalent metal element; and a, b, c, d, and e are respectively numbers satisfying the following formulae: 0.001 <= a <= 0.5, 2.5 <= b <= 3.3, 0.005 <= c <= 0.5, 1.5 <= d <= 2.3, e = {(a + b) x 2 + (c + d) x 3 + 12}/2. |
