PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging element for contributing to obtain high image quality by using charges that are larger than the saturation charge of a photoelectric conversion means constituting the pixel of an imaging element, as signal charges so as to enlarge a dynamic range in the true sense, and to provide an imaging apparatus mounting the imaging element. SOLUTION: A part of the charges that are larger than the saturation charge of the photoelectric conversion means, which constitute the pixel of the imaging element, is stored in a storage means via a second potential barrier, and the remaining charges are discharged to a discharging means via a first potential barrier. Thus, the charges that are larger than the saturation charge of the photoelectric means are used as the signal charges so as to enlarge the dynamic range in the true sense without enlarging the storage means. Moreover, since the reset noise can be removed entirely the imaging element for contributing to obtain the high image quality and the imaging apparatus mounting the imaging element can be provided.
