PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find and set a sampling timing capable of minimizing the change of output even when a deviation from the signal output timing of a CCD image sensor is caused due to component variation. SOLUTION: The image reader provided with the CCD image sensor for converting image information optically read from an original to electric signals and outputting them is made to generate a plurality of sampling signals for sampling the signal level of the output signals of the CCD image sensor while making phases be different, compare the signal levels obtained by sampling the output signals by each of the plurality of sampling signals in the order of the sampling, and decide the phase of the sampling signals in which the absolute value of the change amount of the signal level is a prescribed threshold or less as the phase of the sampling signal for sampling the output signals of the CCD image sensor.
