PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device for an automatic transmission capable of enhancing a degree of freedom in layout by reducing the size of a select lever and capable of obtaining select lever operating force property as required while permitting range change-over operation at the time of failing by mechanical connection of the select lever to a select position change-over device. SOLUTION: A controller 3 is provided with a pseudo-differentiation part 35 for calculating an operation speed of the select lever 11 from a detection result of a positional sensor 61, a peak hold part 37 for conducting peak-hold without decreasing the calculation result of the operation speed of the select lever 11 and an adder 33 for controlling to reduce the operation speed of the select lever 11 when the calculation result of the operation speed of the select lever 11 exceeds a preset threshold value.
