PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for hydrating an olefin for efficiently producing the corresponding alcohol by hydration reaction of the 2-5C olefin. SOLUTION: The method for hydrating an olefin comprises conducting a hydration reaction of the 2-5C olefin at 100-250°C in the presence of a carbon-based solid acid catalyst that is obtained by carbonizing and sulfonating an organic substance. Specifically, in this method, the organic substance is an aromatic hydrocarbon or a saccharide. More specifically, in this method, the olefin is propylene or a butene. Furthermore specifically, in this method, the temperature of the hydration reaction is equal to or higher than 120°C, and in another version of the above method, the temperature of the hydration reaction is equal to or higher than 150°C.
