Shock absorber or oscillating damper (1) comprises operating chambers (4, 5) filled with damping fluid and communicating with each other via a flow resistance (9) which has a control gap with a cross-section which increasingly tapers with increasing pressure of the fluid. Preferred Features: The control gap of the flow resistance is delimited by parts which move relative to each other. One part moves against the other part with increasing pressure of the fluid with tapering of the control gap. The control gap can be closed up to a minimal opening with a defined pressure of the fluid.
